When credit card debt and installments pile up at the same time, the total becomes invisible. Which card has how much debt? What will be charged this month? How much interest is actually being paid?
The Minimum Payment Trap
Minimum payment doesn't pay off debt — it only keeps you from incurring late fees. The remaining balance continues to accrue interest at roughly 3 to 5 percent per month. Annualized, that rate can exceed 40 to 50 percent.
Example: if you carry 10,000 TRY in card debt and make only the minimum payment every month, paying it off completely could take years — and the total amount paid may exceed twice the original principal.
When Installments and Card Debt Combine
These two types of obligation work differently and are often confused:
- Installment purchases: Fixed monthly amount, predetermined end date.
- Card debt (statement balance): Total spent in the billing period — variable and subject to interest.
When both are active simultaneously, a single card statement may show both a past-due balance and multiple installments at the same time. It's easy to pay one while missing the other, since they appear layered within the same statement.
What to Do with Multiple Cards
1. Consolidate all cards in one place: Each card's current balance, payment due date, and installment load should be visible in a single view.
2. Set a payment priority: The snowball method starts with the smallest debt; the avalanche method starts with the highest interest rate. Both work — what matters is being systematic.
3. Track installments separately: Installments appear inside the card balance but they're a distinct commitment. You need to know your current installment load before opening a new one.
4. Know your statement closing date: Transactions made after the closing date roll into the next billing period. Knowing this date makes managing your statement balance much easier.
Warning
Minimum payment only protects you from late fees — it does not reduce the principal. Pay as much as possible each month; ideally clear the full statement balance.
With one card and one installment, tracking this on paper is manageable. But once multiple cards and multiple installments are in play, calculating what's due each month manually becomes genuinely difficult. At that point, most people switch to a tool that shows all cards and installments in a single view.
