How to Build an Emergency Fund?

Job loss, a medical bill, an urgent repair — an emergency fund is what keeps these from becoming debt. Experts recommend saving 3 to 6 months of expenses before anything else.

How Much Do You Need?

Calculate your monthly essential expenses: rent, utilities, groceries, transport, loan and installment payments. Multiply by 3 to 6. For variable or irregular income, aim for 6 months. For a stable salaried job, 3 months is a reasonable starting target.

Where to Keep It

The fund needs to be liquid and value-preserving. Good options: a demand deposit account, a short-term time deposit, or a money market fund. Returns are secondary — what matters is that you can access the money within 24 hours when you need it.

How to Start

Set a small first target — one month of expenses. Set up an automatic transfer or put aside a fixed amount each month. If you have existing debt, make the minimum payments and direct the remainder to the emergency fund. Once the debt is paid off, you can accelerate the fund.

Important

Use the emergency fund only for genuine emergencies — not for holidays or discretionary purchases.

Tracking Monthly Progress

To set the right target amount, you need to know your actual monthly essential expenses. Most people estimate this figure. But rent, utilities, groceries and installments shift from month to month. Without tracking them consistently, both the target amount and the monthly contribution are guesswork. Seeing concrete progress toward the goal each month is also one of the strongest motivators to keep saving.

Most people who try to build an emergency fund track their progress informally. When the actual monthly expense figure is unclear, the target stays vague and contributions become irregular. At that point, having a tool that shows real monthly outflows makes the difference.
