Budgeting does not have to be complicated. The 50/30/20 rule, popularized by Elizabeth Warren, is a simple framework for splitting after-tax income. This guide explains the rule and how to adapt it to Turkey's economic reality.
What Is the 50/30/20 Rule?
The rule divides your net income into three categories:
| Category | Share | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | 50% | Rent, utilities, groceries, transport |
| Wants | 30% | Dining out, subscriptions, hobbies |
| Savings | 20% | Emergency fund, investments, extra debt payments |
Breaking Down Each Category
50% Needs
Housing, utilities, food, transport, health, insurance. A simple test: could you go without it? If the answer is no, it is a need.
30% Wants
Dining out, streaming subscriptions, non-essential clothing, travel. Netflix is a want, not a need.
20% Savings
Emergency fund, private pension (BES), investments, extra debt repayment, large purchase goals.
Does 50/30/20 Work in Turkey?
The rule was designed for stable-income, low-inflation environments. In Turkey, high rent and utilities can push needs to 60-65% of income. Add irregular income — freelancers, commission-based workers, side income — and recalculating percentages each month becomes a recurring math problem. Adapting the ratios to your own reality is necessary. But regardless of which ratio you use, without real spending data you cannot know whether you are hitting your targets.
How to Apply It
Step 1: Calculate your net monthly income. Step 2: Categorize the last 3 months of spending. Step 3: Set your target ratios (adjust if 50% needs is unrealistic). Step 4: Set a limit for each category and track it. Step 5: Review at month end and update for the next month.

Most people who try the 50/30/20 rule estimate their ratios from memory rather than real data. Without category-level tracking, there is no way to know which bucket is over or under — and the rule quietly stops working. That is the point where having actual monthly numbers makes the difference between following the system and guessing.
