How to Track Credit Card Debt

To track credit card debt you need to see each card's statement balance, due date and the installments spread over the coming months in one list. If you only pay the minimum, the rest is charged 3.25% to 4.25% contractual interest per month as of September 2026, plus taxes on top.

Short answer

  • Keep four facts for every card in one place: statement date, due date, statement balance, remaining installments.
  • Pay the full statement balance when you can; the minimum payment stops late fees, not interest.
  • With debt on several cards, send extra money to the card with the highest rate.
  • Add up next months' installments today; they cause the real surprises.

Why credit card debt gets out of hand

What makes card debt hard is not the amount but how scattered it is. The statement is issued on one date, payment is due on another, and installments are written onto every statement for months. With two or three cards it is almost impossible to remember how many due dates you have in a month or how much your cards will ask for over the next three months.

So tracking starts with seeing, not with cutting back. Once all debt sits in one list, it becomes clear which card to clear first, how much you can pay this month and whether a new installment purchase fits your budget.

The four facts you need to track

Fill in the table below for every card. Your bank's statement screen shows all of it.

FactWhy it matters
Statement datePurchases after this date go on the next statement. A large purchase right after the statement date gives you about 40 days until payment.
Due dateIf at least the minimum is not paid by this date, late interest and a negative credit record begin.
Statement balanceThe amount to pay to avoid interest. The minimum payment is only part of it.
Remaining installmentsAmounts that will be added to future statements. Today's balance can look small while the coming months are full.

2026 credit card interest rates in Turkey

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) sets the maximum card interest rate every month, in three tiers based on the size of the statement balance. Maximum monthly rates in force from 1 September 2026:

Statement balanceContractual (monthly)Late payment (monthly)
Below ₺30,0003.25%3.55%
₺30,000 - ₺180,0003.75%4.05%
Above ₺180,0004.25%4.55%

Source: TCMB table in force from 01.09.2026. Rates are updated monthly; your bank may charge less than the maximum.

Contractual interest applies to the unpaid part of the statement balance. Late-payment interest applies to the shortfall when even the minimum is not paid. Both are subject to 15% KKDF (resource utilization support fund) and 15% BSMV (banking and insurance transactions tax), so the real cost is about 1.3 times the stated rate.

The minimum payment trap

The minimum payment depends on your limit: 20% of the statement balance on cards with a total limit of ₺50,000 or less, 40% on cards above ₺50,000. Paying the minimum keeps the card open and protects your credit score, but it does not reduce the debt; the rest moves to next month with interest.

Paying less than the minimum costs even more: the shortfall is charged late-payment interest, a debt unpaid for more than 90 days can go to legal collection, and the record stays on your credit report for a long time.

What happens when installments pile onto card debt

With an installment purchase, only that month's installment appears on the statement, which makes the debt look smaller than it is. When the installments of a phone bought three months ago over 6 months, a repair paid last month over 3, and this month's new purchase stack up, the next statement comes in higher than you expected.

So look at the total load of the next 3 months, not today's balance. Add up the "future installments" of each card by month. If the total is above 30% of your net income, postpone new installment purchases. Our guide to tracking installments goes into more detail.

Several cards: which one do you pay off first?

After paying the minimum on every card, you have two ways to direct any extra money:

  • Avalanche method: Extra money goes to the card with the highest rate. This way you pay the least interest overall. Because card rates depend on the tier, a card with a balance above ₺30,000 is usually the priority.
  • Snowball method: Extra money goes to the card with the smallest balance. Clearing one card quickly is motivating and helps if you struggle to stay consistent.

Both methods are compared with examples in our debt repayment plan article.

A step-by-step card debt tracking plan

  1. Take stock. List every card with its limit, statement date and due date.
  2. Put due dates in a calendar. Set a reminder 2-3 days before each due date.
  3. Spread installments over the months. Add up the card load of the next 6 months, month by month.
  4. Tie the payment to your budget. On payday, set the card payment aside first and plan spending after.
  5. Check before a new installment. Before buying in installments, check the total load of those months.
  6. Review for 10 minutes a month. Update the list when the statement arrives and note why if you paid interest.

Tracking card debt with an app

You can start with a spreadsheet, but moving installments by hand every month and watching the due dates of several cards separately tends to be dropped over time. In butce.app you add your credit card as an account and enter purchases with the number of installments; the installments are written into the right months automatically, and the card balance and due dates appear in the financial calendar. Instead of typing transactions one by one, you can upload your statement PDF and import it with AI Statements.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I only pay the minimum on my credit card?

Contractual interest is charged on the unpaid part, and 15% KKDF plus 15% BSMV are added to that interest. The debt does not shrink; it rolls into the next statement with interest. If you pay less than the minimum, the higher late-payment rate applies to the shortfall.

What is the credit card interest rate in Turkey in 2026?

According to the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) table in force from 1 September 2026, the maximum monthly contractual rate is 3.25% for statement balances below 30,000 TL, 3.75% between 30,000 and 180,000 TL, and 4.25% above 180,000 TL. The late-payment rate is 0.30 points higher in each tier.

How is the minimum payment calculated?

If the card's total limit is 50,000 TL or less, the minimum payment is 20% of the statement balance. Above a 50,000 TL limit it is 40%. For example, on a card with a 40,000 TL limit, the minimum on a 10,000 TL balance is 2,000 TL.

How do I track debt on several credit cards?

Write the statement date, due date, statement balance and remaining installments of every card in one table or app. Put the due dates in a calendar and send any extra money to the card with the highest interest first.
